A Historic Confectionery—Pick Up Famous 'Kenpi' Candy as a Souvenir

About this spot

This long-established confectionery shop, said to have served as official supplier to the Tosa clan, represents one of Kochi's premier sweet makers. The signature specialty is 'Kenpi'—a simple hardened candy made from wheat flour and sugar. This crisp, crispy confection boasts a gentle sweetness and carries the refined character of the original, distinctly different from modern sweet potato versions. The shop also stocks other Tosa-inspired Japanese sweets, such as the elegant 'Ume-fushi' (pickled plums). Browsing the glass cases and selecting treats is itself a delightful experience. Paired with memories of your day on Mount Godai, these souvenirs are perfect to enjoy later at home with a cup of tea.

Tips

The Chiyori-cho main store is located on a major commercial street, just a short walk from the Chiyori-cho streetcar stop. For those arriving by car, nearby coin parking is readily available. Most sweets have good shelf life, making them ideal souvenirs. Popular assortments can sell out in the evening, so arriving early is wise if you have your heart set on a particular item.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 30 minutes. Items may become scarce in the late afternoon, so if you know what you want, it's best to visit before closing time.
