About this spot

A waterfall basin on the Edagawa River (枝川川), a tributary of the Niyodo River, tucked in the mountains of Shimizu-Hodono, Ino-cho (いの町清水程野), Kochi Prefecture. It is renowned as the sacred site that made the term 'Niyodo Blue' known nationwide. When sunlight streams in, the water of the basin glows a mysterious blue so clear you can see all the way to the bottom. Legend holds that a great serpent, said to be the incarnation of a water god, dwells here, and locals have long revered it as a sacred place. In recent years, a promenade and staircase have been built, making it possible to descend close to the basin and experience the world of blue up close. The water's surface changes color moment by moment depending on the angle of light and the weather, offering a once-in-a-lifetime beauty on every visit.

Tips

Parking spaces are limited, so arriving early in the morning is recommended. You'll need to descend a steep staircase to reach the basin, so non-slip shoes are essential. This is a sacred place cherished by locals, so please refrain from entering the water and simply view it quietly. There are no shops or vending machines nearby, so bring your own drinks.

Best time to visit

About 60 minutes. On sunny days, the blue stands out most when light streams in from morning through around noon, and visiting first thing in the morning means fewer people and a quieter experience.
