A hiking experience on Japan's three greatest karst plateau with white limestone dotting the skyline
About this spot
A highland located on the eastern side of the Shikoku Karst, which stretches approximately 25 kilometers along the Ehime-Kochi prefectural border, at an altitude of roughly 1,400 meters. Counted as one of Japan's three largest karst formations, it features a unique landscape where white limestone (karrenfeld) peeks out across the green grassland like a flock of sheep. The highland is equipped with a walking trail called the Therapy Road, where you can stroll through dappled sunlight and ascend to observation spots for panoramic views of Shikoku's layered mountain ranges. Each visit reveals a different face—grazing cattle in summer and susuki grass fields in autumn. A leisurely walk for two amid the crisp air will ease away daily fatigue.
Tips
The Therapy Road has gentle slopes and is easy to walk, but sneakers are essential. At an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters, it's considerably cooler than the lowlands, so bring a light layer even in summer. Fog can suddenly reduce visibility, so check the weather forecast before heading up.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. Late morning is when fog clears, offering the best views of the grassland and mountain ranges.
