Morning Prayer at an Ancient Shrine in Nagahama Where Warlord Chosokabe Motochika Prayed Before His First Battle
About this spot
An ancient shrine located in Nagahama, Kochi, said to have been established in the late Heian period when it was moved from Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine (石清水八幡宮) in Kyoto. It is known as a shrine for "success and good fortune" because the warlord Chosokabe Motochika (長宗我部元親) prayed here for victory before his first battle. A bronze statue of Motochika holding a spear stands at the entrance of the approach path. Walking along the long, straight avenue (approach path) to the main hall is the perfect way to center yourself as your journey begins. The main hall features rare architectural design called "Shuzo-tombo-shiki" (出蜻蛉式), named after the dragonfly's takeoff, and the serene morning atmosphere of the shrine grounds creates a peaceful environment for family worship.
Tips
There is a parking lot for worshippers near the shrine grounds. It's about a 10-minute drive to the Katsurahama area, so visiting early in the morning and then departing is most efficient. The approach path is long, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes required. The cool morning air and quiet shrine grounds with few visitors provide an ideal atmosphere for a leisurely family worship experience.
