View the Cape and Sea from the 24th Pilgrimage Temple Connected to Kōbō Daishi
About this spot
The 24th temple of the Shikoku 88 Sacred Sites pilgrimage, located on the mountaintop at Muroto Cape and affectionately known as 'Eastern Temple (Higashi-dera).' Legend holds that the young Kōbō Daishi achieved enlightenment through training at this site. Muroto carries special significance in the pilgrimage—it is the first temple of Kochi encountered after the long road from Tokushima. The serene atmosphere within the temple grounds, where the main hall and pagoda stand, invites quiet contemplation. Noteworthy features include the 'bell stone,' which rings with a clear tone when struck. From a nearby viewpoint, you can see the coastline of the Ranjou Promenade you just walked, the white Muroto Cape Lighthouse, and the majestic Pacific all at once.
Tips
By car, use the Muroto Skyline to reach the mountain-top parking lot. If walking the pilgrimage route from the cape, steep slopes mean allow about 30 minutes and come with adequate stamina. The grounds are a quiet place of prayer; please observe proper pilgrimage etiquette during your visit.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. The shaded temple grounds are pleasant in mid-afternoon, and views from the viewpoint are crystal clear.
