An Aquarium Where Sharks and Sea Turtles Swim in an Abandoned School's 25-Meter Pool

A rare aquarium nationwide that fully utilizes a decommissioned elementary school building and pool. In the outdoor 25-meter pool, sea turtles and hammerhead sharks glide gracefully, while hand-washing basins and vault boxes inside the school building have been transformed into aquarium tanks. Most of the creatures on display are residents of Muroto's waters, caught in local fish traps, allowing you to appreciate the richness of the nearby sea. The interior, which retains the character of a schoolhouse, feels nostalgic to adults and refreshingly novel to children. When you peer into the school pool and make eye contact with a sea turtle, you'll experience a unique, gentle, and wondrous moment found nowhere else.
Tips
Free parking is available in front of the school building, but this popular facility gets crowded on weekends and holidays. The outdoor poolside offers little shade, so a hat is recommended. The shop's original merchandise has a unique selection and is popular as a souvenir.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Afternoon light in the outdoor pool creates a shimmering effect on the water, and sea turtles are easy to spot.
