About this spot

This sea cave was created by fierce Kuroshio Current waves carving through granite cliff faces over long ages. With a height of approximately 16 meters and width of approximately 17 meters, it ranks among Japan's largest granite sea caves. It is designated as a Kochi Prefecture natural monument and is a signature landscape of Ashizuri. Descending the walking trail stairs to the shoreline allows you to witness waves passing through the cave from up close. The sound of crashing waves, the scent of salt spray, and the dramatic rock face are far more impressive than photographs suggest. From a higher vantage point, the cave's outline is said to resemble a heart shape, making it a popular and auspicious viewing spot.

Tips

From the walking trail entrance near Manjiro Ashiyu, it takes about 10 minutes on foot to reach the shore. The hike involves steep stairs going down and back up, so wear comfortable shoes. On days with high waves, be cautious and don't approach the shore too closely.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. On calm days, you can descend close to the cave and view it thoroughly.
