Natural Museum—Ashizuri Submarine Observatory

Flow of the course

About this spot

A white submarine observation tower standing at the end of a pier jutting into Tatsucushi's sea. As you descend the spiral staircase, you enter the underwater world 7 meters deep. Surrounding round observation windows frame colorful fish like Japanese jack mackerel and blue-green damselfish crossing before your eyes, offering the strange experience of an underwater walk while staying completely dry and fully clothed. What fish appear and how they school varies by tide and season, so there's always an element of pleasant surprise. It's the perfect romantic spot to peer into Ashizuri's underwater world together without diving. The time spent side by side searching for fish becomes surprisingly absorbing.

Tips

Admission is required. Transparency tends to decrease the day after rough seas, so timing when the weather has been calm is recommended. The pier can be quite windy, so take care your hat doesn't blow away.

Best time to visit

Approximately 50 minutes required. On calm days in late morning, light penetrates deep into the sea for excellent visibility.
