Spend Time Together in the Transparent Blue Sea Where Boats Appear to Float in Air

About this spot

A small island about 4 km in circumference at the tip of Otsuki Town, connected to the mainland by a bridge. In this sea area where the Kuroshio Current and Bungo Channel flows collide, the transparency is remarkably high; the blue sea, described as where "boats appear floating in the air," is breathtakingly beautiful. About one-third of all fish species found in Japan are said to be encountered here, making it famous as a holy site for divers and snorkelers. The emerald blue gradation seen from the bridge, the white sandy beach and its wave sounds, the small fishing boats passing by—every view is picturesque. The time you spend together in this picture-perfect setting is the true highlight of this course.

Tips

About 50 minutes by car from Tatsucushi. Roads on the island are narrow and parking is limited, so drive carefully. During summer swimming season, it gets crowded, so arriving early in the afternoon is safer. There's little shade, so sun protection is essential.

Best time to visit

Approximately 2 hours required. When the sun is high, the sea's transparency and blue gradation are most striking.
