Ancient Shrine for Good Marriages: Verdant Approach and Modern Charm Pavilion

About this spot

Nestled at the base of the sacred Mt. Homan, this ancient shrine is dedicated to Tamayorihime-no-Mikoto, goddess of good marriages and matchmaking. Tradition holds it was founded as a place of prayer to protect the northeast direction (demon gate) of the Dazaifu government, and has long drawn pilgrims as the starting point for climbing Mt. Homan. The stone-step approach is enveloped in deep greenery and is known as a scenic spot for cherry blossoms and autumn foliage. The glass-walled modern charm pavilion is renowned for its refined design, creating a striking harmony with the traditional sanctuary buildings. From the terrace, you can see the townscape and mountains of Dazaifu, and visitors from across the nation come to seek the popular matchmaking charms.

Tips

From Dazaifu Tenmangu, the community bus 'Mahoroba-go' or a taxi is convenient. The approach has stone steps, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The matchmaking charms come in diverse designs, so allow time to browse carefully at the pavilion.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. In the clear morning light, the verdant approach and terrace views are particularly beautiful.
