Main Sanctuary Prayers and Sacred Bull Tour at the Headquarters of the God of Learning
About this spot
The main headquarters of all Tenman shrines nationwide, dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, venerated as the god of learning, sincerity, and warding off evil. According to tradition, the sanctuary was built directly above Michizane's tomb. The custom is to pay respects by crossing three bridges spanning Shinjiike Pond, each representing past, present, and future. Throughout the grounds stand statues of sacred bulls; it is said that gently touching their heads grants wisdom. Near the main sanctuary stands the sacred plum tree, Tobiume, its branches spreading wide—legend has it that this tree flew here in a single night from the capital out of reverence for Michizane. Renowned as a plum blossom viewing spot and hosting visitors year-round from students preparing for exams to families, it stands as one of Kyushu's most representative shrines.
Tips
The grounds are expansive with many points of interest, making early morning hours before crowds arrive ideal for a leisurely visit. Multiple sacred bull statues are scattered about, and searching for your favorite among them is part of the fun. Save the food stalls along the approach for lunch; focusing on prayers in the morning is recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Early morning before the crowds—when the water of Shinjiike Pond is calm and serene—is best.
