Ranked as one of Japan's three great morning markets, this is the signature morning market of Yobuko (呼子), a port town on the Genkai Sea. In the morning, stalls line the street selling overnight-dried squid, freshly landed seafood, just-picked vegetables and fruit, and flowers, with lively calls from vendors filling the air. The stalls are run by Yobuko's local mother-figure vendors, and the warm exchanges — getting a discount, a free taste, a bit of chat — are the market's greatest treat. There's also plenty of street food to enjoy on the spot, such as freshly grilled squid and dried seafood. Feel the pulse of daily life in this port town up close, and start your travel morning in the best possible way.
Tips
The morning market runs only in the morning, and stalls start closing as noon approaches. Selection and energy are at their best earlier in the morning, so arriving as early as possible is recommended. Stalls are mostly cash-only, so bring small change, and wet wipes come in handy for snacking as you walk.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. Around 9am, once all the stalls are open and the market is at its liveliest, is the best time to visit.
