A World of Fish Seen from 7 Meters Below Sea Level

About this spot

An observation tower standing on a jetty extending into the sea at Hado Cape, allowing you to walk down into the ocean on your own to view it. The observation room 7 meters below sea level, reached by descending a spiral staircase, is lined with sea windows all around, letting you observe up close the fish swimming in Genkai Sea and seaweed clinging to rocks without getting wet. When schools of fish pass by the windows, it's like a natural aquarium. From the sea deck above, you can also enjoy a grand panorama of Genkai Sea and island silhouettes toward Iki, experiencing two completely different faces of the sea—above and below. The approach itself, walking on the jetty over the ocean, is thrilling and makes this a very popular spot for families with children.

Tips

After rough weather when the sea is turbid, fish may be hard to see, so clear, calm days are best. The observation room involves ascending and descending a spiral staircase, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The jetty is often windy, so it's safer to hold your hat rather than wear it.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Daytime when light reaches the seabed, and on days with calm waves, is best for observing fish.
