The Great Camphor Tree of Takeo (武雄の大楠)

Flow of the course

About this spot

The divine tree of Takeo Shrine, said to be 3,000 years old and one of Japan's most impressive giant trees. After walking a few minutes along the bamboo-lined shrine path from beside the main hall, the view suddenly opens and a massive trunk with sprawling branches reaching toward the heavens appears before you. At the gnarled base of the trunk lies a large hollow, within which a small shrine is enshrined – the overwhelming presence of this ancient being, which has endured 3,000 years, will leave you speechless. Due to protection measures at the base, you cannot approach it closely, but the viewing area in front offers an absolutely commanding presence. Spending time beneath the rustling bamboo grove and the songs of birds, simply gazing upward, is the highlight of this entire course.

Tips

Access beyond the viewing area is restricted for preservation, so a camera with a good zoom or a smartphone with zoom capability will allow you to observe fine details. The bamboo grove path becomes slippery after rain, so watch your footing carefully. In summer, insect repellent is reassuring.

Best time to visit

Approximately 50 minutes. The early morning light slanting through the bamboo grove creates an especially mystical atmosphere
