The Vermilion-Lacquered Gate Tower Designed by the Architect of Tokyo Station

The symbol of Takeo Hot Springs, this striking vermilion-lacquered gate tower stands proudly at the entrance to the hot spring district. It was designed by Kingo Tatsuno, a Saga Prefecture-affiliated architect who designed Tokyo Station's Marunouchi building. This two-story gate, said to have been built using traditional techniques without nails, is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. The ceiling of the second floor features sculptural reliefs of four of the twelve zodiac animals, and when combined with the eight zodiac symbols adorning the dome of Tokyo Station's building, the complete set of twelve is formed – a thoughtful detail. Beside the gate stands the Takeo Hot Spring New Building (武雄温泉新館), also designed by Kingo Tatsuno, where you can admire masterpiece architecture at your leisure with its beautiful contrast of vermilion and white.

Tips

The second floor of the gate tower is open for viewing at certain times in the morning, so if you wish to see the zodiac sculptures up close, check the opening status in advance. The adjacent Takeo Hot Spring New Building can be visited for free, and its retro design is perfect for photography. The gate tower area is a popular photo spot, so aim for quieter hours to get memorable shots.
