Scarlet Pagoda Hailed as 'Chinsei Nikko' - One of Japan's Three Great Inari Shrines
About this spot
One of Japan's three greatest Inari shrines and a representative shrine of Kashima. The main hall, finished entirely in lacquer, soars atop a high platform built into the mountainside, with an architectural style reminiscent of Kyoto's Kiyomizu-dera stage. Together with its vividly colored gate tower, the magnificent splendor has long been celebrated as 'Chinsei Nikko.' As the deity of prosperity in business and family fortune, the shrine attracts worshippers throughout the year. From the main hall, climbing further along the mountain path lined with scarlet torii gates, the observation platform at the inner sanctum offers a view spanning the townscape of Kashima and the Ariake Sea. Along the approach path before the shrine, shops selling the famous inari sponge cake souvenirs create a lively atmosphere, and enjoying snacks after your visit is part of the experience.
Tips
Stone steps lead to the main hall, but there is also a paid elevator on the side for those concerned about their legs. The path to the inner sanctum becomes a steep stone mountain trail, so comfortable shoes are recommended; depending on your time and stamina, turning back at one of the scenic viewpoints along the way is also an option. Early in the morning, the approach is quiet and allows for a leisurely visit.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes required. Early morning hours offer a quiet atmosphere with clear air, making the scarlet shrine building even more vivid.
