Japan's First Trading Company Site Beyond Dragon Horse Street's Stone Steps

A memorial hall built on the site of Kameyama Shachu, the trading company co-founded by Sakamoto Ryoma (坂本龍馬) and his companions, known as Japan's first. As the operational base for young men who engaged in maritime transport and trade while shaping the late Edo period, the hall displays artifacts related to Ryoma and reproductions of historical items, allowing visitors to imagine the era through the room layouts. The "Dragon Horse Street" (龍馬通り) stone steps leading from the base are said to be the very path Ryoma and his companions climbed. Along the way are attractions such as Ryoma's boots statue (龍馬のぶーつ像). Looking back from the top of the steps reveals Nagasaki's town and harbor spreading at your feet.

Tips

The ascent from the base involves long stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water. The memorial hall is compact, so you may need to wait during peak hours. Ryoma's boots statue nearby is a popular spot where you can actually place your feet inside for a commemorative photo.
