About this spot

Located west of Shimabara Castle, this is the former samurai town of lower-ranking warriors once called Teppoucho (Musket Town). A clear water channel fed by spring water flows down the center of the street and was once cherished as vital for daily use. Along the road bordered by stone walls stand preserved thatched-roof samurai residences, and visitors can tour the interiors of certain homes free of charge, experiencing the austere yet dignified lifestyle of samurai up close. The interplay of the trickling water channel, stone walls, and green woodlands creates a street that transports you back in time with each step. After viewing the castle town from above at Shimabara Castle, you now experience this corner of the town at eye level, seeing it from the perspective of everyday inhabitants.

Tips

The street features stone-paved and gravel paths, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. While open residences are free to enter, some areas require removing your shoes, so easily removable footwear is more comfortable. In summer, the murmur of the water channel brings a refreshing coolness.

Best time to visit

Approximately 50 minutes. The mid-morning hours when dappled sunlight shimmers on the water channel are particularly pleasant.
