Premier West Coast Observation Deck Overlooking Shiratsuru Beach and Myoken-ura
About this spot
An observation park located on a hilltop along National Route 389, which runs through Amakusa's west coast. Looking southward, the white sandy shores of Shiratsuru Beach (白鶴浜)—named for its resemblance to a crane spreading its wings—describe a graceful arc, while to the north, the rugged sea cliffs of Myoken-ura (妙見浦), designated as a National Scenic Spot and Natural Monument, stretch dramatically. Monument stones in the park commemorate poet Yosano Tekkan and his wife Akiko, who traveled through Amakusa, preserving the memory of this west coast landscape beloved by literary figures. The striking contrast between the deep blue of the East China Sea and the white sandy beach is breathtakingly beautiful—a brief stop during your drive will give you one of Amakusa's most memorable photographs.
Tips
The walk from the parking area to the observation deck is short and easy. Since there's little shade, a hat is recommended. If you have extra time, drive down to Shiratsuru Beach below and take a walk along the white sands.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes. On clear days with clean air, the contrast between the white beach and blue sea is most striking.
