Beppu's Iconic Cobalt Blue Hell

About this spot

The premier attraction on any Beppu hell-tour itinerary, Umi Jigoku features a sprawling cobalt blue pool. The cool blue hue results from ferric sulfate dissolved in the hot spring water, yet despite its refreshing appearance, the pool maintains a temperature of approximately 98 degrees Celsius. The striking contrast between the pale white billowing steam and the vivid blue water is truly emblematic of Beppu's otherworldly landscape. The grounds include a greenhouse where giant water lilies—so large that children can ride on their leaves—are cultivated using geothermal heat. A small Inari shrine with vermillion torii gates and a foot bath also await visitors, allowing you to leisurely explore this hell designated as a National Scenic Area.

Tips

Beppu's hells offer combination admission tickets, so check with the ticket office first if you plan to visit multiple sites. The garden paths are damp from steam and can be slippery, so watch your footing. The hot spring eggs and paradise buns sold at the shop make perfect snacks for eating while walking.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Visiting first thing in the morning means fewer crowds and the chance to leisurely admire the blue steam-shrouded pool.
