Panoramic Views of the Castle Town from the Seaside Castle Ruins Associated with Otomo Sorin
About this spot
The ruins of a castle built by Otomo Sorin, known as the Christian daimyo, on Niyu Island floating in Usuki Bay. It was once a natural fortress surrounded by sea and was also called "Kame Castle" (Turtle Castle), but even today, with landfill progressing around the area, cut stone walls and turrets remain atop the steep rocky mountain, vividly conveying the appearance of a seaside castle. The ruins are now maintained as a park, featuring turrets such as the Tatami Turret and Uzin-kuchi Gate Turret, as well as a restored Great Gate Turret that overlooks the castle town streets. From the main circle, you can overlook the entire town of Usuki, providing an ideal vantage point to prepare for your afternoon stroll through Nijo-za by gazing toward that direction.
Tips
The ascent has stone steps and slopes, so watch your footing carefully. Known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, the park becomes crowded with flower-viewing visitors on weekends during the season. There are few shops within the park, so it's best to bring drinking water.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes required. The morning light before noon creates striking contrast between the stone walls and town scenery.
