Feel the Spirit of a Literary Master's Saiki Days in His Former Residence

About this spot

A memorial museum housed in the residence where Meiji-era literary master Kunikidata Doppo lodged while serving as an English and mathematics teacher in Saiki. Located in a corner of the castle town that retains the character of samurai residences, near Castle Mountain, Doppo lived here with his younger brother while walking through Castle Mountain and Saiki's seaside, experiences reflected vividly in his later works such as "Spring Bird" (春の鳥) and "Old Genzou" (源おぢ). The museum displays materials centered on Doppo's time in Saiki; viewing the garden from the tatami-mat room allows visitors to reflect on the young writer's days. It serves as the heart of a literary walk, resonating with the "Doppo's Path" on Castle Mountain traversed that morning.

Tips

The Saiki City Historical Museum is just a short walk away, making it efficient to visit both consecutively. The surrounding area is developed as the "History and Literature Path" with white-walled alleyways on gentle slopes, so remaining in your walking shoes is recommended. Confirm the museum's closure days in advance for peace of mind.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes. Early afternoon allows leisurely viewing of the exhibits, residence, and garden.
