About this spot

Built by Kuroda Kanbe (Jōsui) and completed by Hosokawa Tadaoki, this castle is counted among Japan's three great water castles alongside Imabari Castle (今治城) and Takamatsu Castle (高松城) due to its distinctive design with seawater drawn into the moat. Taking advantage of its location near the mouth of the Nakatsugawa River, the stonework reveals differences in construction methods between the Kuroda and Hosokawa periods that can be compared at the joints—a sight worth seeing. The interior of the reconstructed five-story keep serves as the Okudaira Family History Museum, displaying armor and swords connected to the Okudaira clan, which distinguished itself in the Battle of Nagashino. From the top floor, the Suo Channel and rows of castle-town houses come into full view, allowing you to experience the appeal of a water castle's proximity to the sea.

Tips

The stairs inside the keep require climbing, so wear comfortable shoes. The differences in stonework masonry can be seen at the joints on the north side of the inner citadel; it's recommended to make a loop around the moat before and after viewing the keep. Parking is available near the castle, and it's just a short walk to the History Museum.

Best time to visit

Plan for approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Morning is best for a clear view from the keep, with the morning light making the moat waters sparkle.
