Sake-Making Tools and History in an Edo-Period Brewery

About this spot

Kuncho Sake Brewery, with its brewery in Mameda Town, has opened an Edo-period sake brewery as a museum. Inside the brewery with its thick beams, large wooden barrels and kegs used for fermentation, tools for koji (mold) production, and other traditional sake-making implements are displayed in rows, free to view. The cool air of the brewery tinged with the subtle aroma of sake adds to the charm. The adjoining shop carries sake and amazake (sweet rice drink) produced by the brewery, making it a pleasant place to select souvenirs. You can experience the sake culture nurtured by Hita's abundant water—called the 'water town'—freely during your town walk.

Tips

Admission is free, but since it's an old brewery, there are uneven floors, so watch your step. The shop mainly sells bottled sake, which can be heavy, so consider bringing an eco-bag for larger purchases. It's recommended to efficiently view the highlights before your next meal.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes. A quiet moment before lunch to slowly explore the cool brewery interior.
