About this spot
The central district of Hita, which became a Tenryō—territory directly controlled by the shogunate—during the Edo period and prospered as a political and economic hub of Kyushu. The streets are laid out along the axes of Miyuki-dori and Kamimachi-dori, lined with white-walled storehouses and plaster-finished merchant houses, designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. Along the streets, long-established soy sauce shops, traditional Japanese sweets shops, Hita sandal stores, and souvenir shops stand side by side, and each time you pass through a noren curtain, new discoveries await. Historic mansions and old townhouses adapted into museums are scattered throughout, offering glimpses of daily life in the prosperous Tenryō commerce. Often called the 'Little Kyoto of Kyushu,' this town is perfect for a leisurely stroll while gazing up at latticed windows and the craftsmanship of the storehouses.
Tips
The streets can easily be explored on foot, but popular sweets and local specialties often sell out by early afternoon, so it's worth visiting shops of interest first. Many shops offer bulk purchases and samples, so having small change is convenient. Viewing mansions and museums may require separate admission fees.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The late morning, when shops are fully open, is quiet and pleasant for walking.
