Panoramic Views of the Kuuju Mountain Range from the Cliff-Side Mountain Castle That Inspired "Ruin Castle Moon"

These are the ruins of a mountain castle built on a clifftop plateau where no buildings remain—only magnificent stone walls stacked in multiple layers rise skyward. The towering stone walls atop the sheer cliffs are nothing short of spectacular and evoke the image of an impregnable fortress. Standing at the main keep ruins, you can gaze across a vast panorama encompassing the Kuuju mountain range and even the Aso mountains. Composer Taki Rentaro, who spent his youth in Taketa, is said to have played at these ruins and later been inspired to compose the masterpiece "Ruin Castle Moon" (荒城の月). A statue of Taki Rentaro by sculptor Asakura Fumio stands at the second enclosure. It is also renowned as a viewing spot for cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage in fall, and stands as Taketa's symbol.

Tips

The castle features stone-paved slopes and stairs throughout, so sturdy, comfortable walking shoes are essential. Many areas atop the stone walls lack railings, so families with young children should hold hands while enjoying the views. The scroll-shaped admission ticket you receive at the entrance is a popular souvenir.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Visiting early in the morning when there are fewer tourists lets you enjoy the stone walls and mountain ranges amid crisp, clear air.
