About this spot
Located at Chōjahara, known as a trekking base for the Kujo mountain range within Aso-Kujo National Park, this visitor center offers free opportunities to learn about the formation of Kujo's mountains, the flora and fauna thriving in the highlands, and the nature of the adjacent Tadewara Wetland through exhibits and videos—perfect preparation for your afternoon wetland walk. Surrounding the center are shops and restaurants where you can enjoy local Oita mountain cuisine such as dango soup and tori-ten for your lunch. Dining while gazing out at Kujo's peaks, including Mimata-yama, is a luxurious moment unique to a highland drive.
Tips
Restaurants get crowded with climbers and tourists around noon; visiting slightly off-peak times allows for more leisurely meals. Obtain a wetland highlights map from the center before heading to the boardwalk. The highland at approximately 1,000 meters is cooler than lower elevations, so bringing a light jacket is wise.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Visiting outside peak lunch hours allows both dining and exhibit viewing to be more relaxed.
