Grand Panorama of Beppu Bay and Yufu-dake from a 10-Minute Aerial Walk

About this spot

A ropeway connecting the mid-slope and near-summit of Tsurumi-dake, which rises to the west of Beppu city, allowing you to enjoy a pleasant 10-minute aerial walk aboard a large gondola. As you gain altitude, the fan-shaped Beppu cityscape and the blue of Beppu Bay spread below in an ever-expanding view, offering a unique vantage point to see the hot spring city with rising steam from above. From the summit station, a walking trail is well-maintained, and as you visit observation spots, a grand panorama unfolds where you can see Yufu-dake and the Kuju mountains, and on clear days, even as far as Shikoku. The natural beauty of Tsurumi-dake changes with the seasons—Miyama Kirishima in spring, cool breezes in summer, autumn foliage in fall, and frost flowers in winter—adding to its charm. This is the finest observation experience in Bungo, a worthy way to begin your drive.

Tips

The mountain is significantly cooler than the city below, so it's wise to bring a light jacket even in summer. The mountain trail has ups and downs, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Choosing a clear day is key to enjoying it fully; the air tends to be clearer in the morning, offering better distant views. Operating conditions may change due to strong winds, so check the day's operating status before heading up.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 2 hours. The clear morning air offers the best views of Beppu Bay and distant mountains, making this the recommended time.
