About this spot

This lake spreads across a highland plateau at about 600 meters elevation, at the foot of Mt. Tsurumi and Mt. Yufu, and on windless days its surface turns into a mirror that clearly reflects the mountains. Swan boats and rental boats float on the lake, and the highland scenery viewed from the water while pedaling as a family is truly special. The lakeshore has a grassy plaza and a walking trail that circles the lake, perfect for spreading out a sheet in the shade of the trees for lunchtime. The swans that live on the lake sometimes come right up close, delighting children. With a campground attached, this open lakeside spot lets you take a relaxed midday break in the middle of your drive.

Tips

It's a good idea to pick up your lunch and drinks in the city of Beppu beforehand to enjoy at the lakeside. Since this is a highland area, the shade stays cool even in summer, so a leisure sheet makes things more comfortable. The swans are cute, but they're wild animals, so watch them from a bit of a distance rather than chasing or trying to touch them. Walking all the way around the lake takes about 30 minutes.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. On calm days, daytime is a great time for photos, when Mt. Yufu is easily reflected on the lake's surface.
