About this spot
A lake spreading across a highland at an elevation of approximately 600 meters at the foot of Tsurumi-dake and Yufu-dake, where on windless days the surface becomes a mirror perfectly reflecting the mountains. Swan boats and rental boats float on the lake, and the highland scenery viewed from the water as the family pedals together is exceptional. The lakeside features open grassy areas and a walking trail that circles the lake, perfect for spreading a picnic blanket in the shade. Wild swans living in the lake sometimes approach close by, delighting children. With a campground also on-site, you can enjoy a leisurely lunch break in this spacious lakeside setting during your drive.
Tips
It's recommended to purchase lunch and drinks in advance from Beppu city. Even in summer, the shade on the highland is cool, and a picnic mat makes it more comfortable. While the swans are charming, they are wild animals, so observe them from a distance without chasing or attempting to touch them. A walk around the lake takes approximately 30 minutes.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. A calm day during daytime is the perfect time for photography, as Yufu-dake reflects beautifully on the lake's surface.
