On Hanamori Mountain in Takahashi Town stands a remarkable and heartwarming collection of approximately 700 stone statues, large and small. The story began when Yasukichi Iwaoka, a local elder, made a vow to console the spirits of ancient people buried in the nearby Mochida ancient tomb group at the mountain's foot. He devoted himself to carving these statues, which departed from textbook depictions of Buddhist images. With their large eyes and gentle, serene smiles, these humble stone sculptures have a way of easing tension simply by being observed. From the hilltop, you can gaze out over the town of Takahashi and even to the Hyuga-nada Sea—watching the sea from among these statues offers one of the journey's most healing moments.
Tips
Hanamori Mountain involves slopes and stairs, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. There is little shade, so a hat and water are recommended. After rain, be cautious of muddy ground. Climb at your own pace to the scenic hilltop.

Allow approximately 1 hour. Afternoon light gently illuminates the statues' expressions and is recommended.
