Nestled at the center of Aoshima, a small island floating off the Hyuga Coast, this shrine is widely revered as a place for matchmaking and good connections. It enshrines Hikohohodemine no Mikoto (also known as Yamahiko from the mythological tale of Kamiyo and Yamahiko) and his wife, Princess Toyotama, who appear in the legend of the sea god and mountain god. A path of white sand leads from the beach to the island via the Yayoi Bridge, and as you approach along the approach path, the vermillion-lacquered shrine buildings come into view. The island is encircled by Oni-no-Sentakuita, wave-carved rock formations that have been sculpted by the ocean over countless ages. These orderly rows of rippled rock formations stretching seaward have been designated as a National Natural Monument. The entire island is blanketed in subtropical vegetation, including borassus palms, and beyond the main hall lies a jungle-like pathway leading to the original shrine location. Praying in this sanctuary enveloped by the tropical air is an unmistakably Miyazaki experience.

Tips

The Oni-no-Sentakuita reveals its grandeur most dramatically during low tide, so checking the tidal schedule beforehand ensures you'll witness the full splendor. The bridge and island areas can have strong sun and sea breezes, so a hat is recommended. Wear comfortable walking shoes if you plan to venture to the original shrine location beyond the main hall.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Morning hours coinciding with low tide showcase the Oni-no-Sentakuita in its most impressive form.
