Forest Therapy Walk at the Legendary Purification Pond

About this spot

Situated quietly within the Citizens' Forest of Abuagihara, beyond Eta Shrine, this pond is also called Misogi Pond. According to mythology, after returning from the land of the dead, Izanagi performed purification rites at this location, and Amaterasu and other deities were born from this act. This site is recognized as the birthplace of purification ritual. The water surface, surrounded by trees, mirrors the sky with perfect stillness, and in summer, water lilies float upon it. Walking slowly along the forest path overlooking the pond, you hear only birdsong and rustling leaves—a perfect forest therapy experience. This walking path, unique to Miyazaki, allows you to literally walk through the mythological stage you've learned about in textbooks.

Tips

The forest path has a dirt surface, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The area is shaded but use insect repellent in summer. The quiet forest setting invites listening to nature's sounds—a lovely activity to share with children. Combined with Eta Shrine, the round-trip walk takes about 30 minutes of light hiking.

Best time to visit

Approximately 40 minutes. Afternoon light dancing on the water's surface creates beautiful photo opportunities.
