Family Visit to an Ancient Shrine Dedicated to Izanagi

About this spot

Nestled within the pine forest of Abuagihara, this ancient shrine is dedicated to Izanagi-no-Mikoto as the principal deity and Izanami-no-Mikoto as a co-enshrined deity. This area is believed to be the legendary site where Izanagi performed purification rites—"Tsukushi no Hinata Tachibana no Ogeshio no Abuagihara" from ancient mythology—and has long been a place of worship. Within the shrine grounds stands a sacred camphor tree said to bestow spiritual strength to those who touch it, and a serene atmosphere permeates the sanctuary. Known nationwide as a power spot, this location where parents and children can directly experience the mythology of Miyazaki's heritage is truly special.

Tips

The shrine grounds are a place of quiet reverence, so discussing proper etiquette with children beforehand will enhance the experience. From the inner shrine, a path leads to the misogi pond through the Citizens' Forest. The dense forest can have many insects in certain seasons, so insect repellent is helpful. Parking is available near the torii gate.

Best time to visit

Approximately 40 minutes. Early afternoon when dappled sunlight filters through the approach path is particularly pleasant.
