This prefectural museum stands in a corner of the grove adjacent to Miyazaki Shrine, and its permanent exhibitions are free to view. The museum is organized into three sections: natural history, history, and folk customs, featuring recreated exhibits of the broadleaf evergreen forests that cover Miyazaki's mountains and materials related to Hyuga mythology, including the descent of the heavenly grandson, allowing you to learn about this land's origins in three dimensions. On the museum grounds, there is a folk house garden with thatched-roof old houses relocated from various areas, where you can experience how people lived in the past. Visiting after your shrine prayers will give the city's landscape and food culture you encounter afterward much greater depth and meaning.

Tips

The permanent exhibitions are free, but special exhibitions may charge a separate admission fee. Since the exhibits are extensive, it's recommended to work backward from your lunch time to focus on must-see areas. The folk house garden is outdoors, so be cautious of your footing on rainy days.
