Ebino Plateau (えびの高原)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A highland plateau at approximately 1,200 meters elevation in the northwest of the Kirishima mountain range. The name is said to derive from autumn, when the plateau's expanse of Japanese pampas grass turns shrimp-pink in the setting sun. Before you rises Karakunidake, the highest peak of the Kirishima range. In the azalea fields, you'll find groves of Miyama Kirishima azaleas, and in early summer, you can see nodding lady fern flowers, which are said to grow naturally only on Ebino Plateau. Well-maintained walking trails include the pond-loop nature exploration path that passes Hakushiji Pond, Rokkannon-mi-ike Pond, and Fudo Pond, allowing you to choose hiking routes suited to your fitness level. Breathing in the pristine air and experiencing the majestic volcanic landscape with all your senses, this is the premier highland walking destination of southern Kyushu.

Tips

Some walking trails may be restricted due to volcanic activity, so follow the routes confirmed at the Eco-Museum Center. The weather at the plateau changes quickly, and even in summer the wind can be cold, so bring a light jacket. Sturdy walking shoes and water are essential.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Hiking in the morning when the air is clearest offers the best views of the Kirishima peaks.
