An Observation Deck at 107 Meters Overlooking Sakurajima and the City—Shiroyama Observatory

About this spot

The observation deck atop Shiroyama (Castle Mountain) rising behind the city offers a panoramic view of Sakurajima, Kinko Bay, and the cityscape from 107 meters. The imposing presence of Sakurajima directly before you is far more striking than any photograph. The entire mountain is a natural treasure trove of subtropical plants including massive camphor trees and ferns, and the woodland trail leading from its base is perfect for a leisurely forest bath climb. Shiroyama is also known as the site of the final fierce battle of the Satsuman Rebellion, adding historical resonance to your walk. End your day—which began in a daimyo's garden—by taking in a grand panorama of Satsuma's mountains, sea, and volcano.

Tips

Climbing from the Teruokuni Shrine side takes about 20-30 minutes one way. Those less confident in hiking can drive or take a bus near the summit. The observation deck is windswept, so a light jacket is reassuring. Late afternoon can become crowded with tour buses.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. Later afternoon light illuminates Sakurajima beautifully for photography.
