Morning Prayer at the Ancient Vermillion Shrine Dedicated to Ninigi-no-Mikoto

One of South Kyushu's oldest and most esteemed shrines, dedicated to Ninigi-no-Mikoto, grandson of Amaterasu Ōmikami, who according to mythology descended from heaven to earth. The shrine once stood near Takachihohane but was relocated to its current location after repeated destruction from eruptions of Kirishima Mountain. The main hall, subsidiary hall, and worship hall, adorned with vermillion lacquer and colorful decorations, are designated as National Treasures and earn the shrine the epithet "the Nikkō of the West" for its resplendent beauty. The approach lined with ancient cedar trees grows increasingly serene with each step, and from the viewpoint within the grounds, on clear days you can see across to Kinko Bay and Sakurajima Island. A solemn morning prayer here is a fitting beginning to your mythological realm tour.

Tips

The grounds feature stone-paved paths and stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Early morning visits mean fewer worshippers and the purest air for a quiet prayer experience. If you wish to receive a commemorative stamp (goshuin), check the stamp office's operating hours beforehand for peace of mind.
