Sacred Site of the Heavenly Grandson's Descent: Takachihohara Old Shrine Ruins and Takachihohane Walking Tour
About this spot
A sacred landscape at approximately 970 meters elevation at the base of Takachihohane, where Furushin'in (the old sacred site) remains from when Kirishima Shrine was originally established. Even after the shrine buildings were lost to volcanic eruption, the site continued to be revered as a place of worship, and the stone-constructed altar (saijō) standing solemnly beyond the torii gate embodies profound sanctity. The Visitor Center features exhibits about Kirishima's volcanic formation, local flora and fauna, and hiking trail information. Accessible walking paths are maintained throughout the area. According to legend, Ninigi-no-Mikoto descended from heaven to Takachihohane, where the "Heavenly Reversed Spear" (Ama-no-Sakahoko) now stands at the summit. The majestic appearance of the mountain as viewed from below is truly a mythological sight. The crystal-clear air that invites deep breathing is a gift unique to this sacred place.
Tips
Parking is fee-based. Some sections of the walking paths are covered with volcanic debris and can be slippery, so watch your footing carefully. Kirishima is an active volcano; check the latest volcanic information and any access restrictions before visiting. The high elevation means cooler temperatures than in town, so bringing a light jacket is advisable.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Clear air in the late morning makes Takachihohane's silhouette beautifully distinct.
