A 15-Minute Voyage with Ocean Breeze – Viewing Sakurajima from the Ferry Deck
About this spot
The ferry connecting Kagoshima Port and Sakurajima Port in roughly 15 minutes serves as the island's lifeline for commuters and students. Beyond its convenient frequent service, the real attraction for travelers is the view from the deck. Standing in the ocean breeze of Kinko Bay, watching Sakurajima grow larger and larger with its volcanic smoke trailing skyward offers an exhilarating introduction to your island exploration. The standing udon noodle shop inside the ferry is so famous that it's said the proper way to enjoy it is to eat it during the short voyage. Since you can board vehicles, it's also the perfect starting point for those planning to tour the island by car.
Tips
Fares are paid collectively at Sakurajima Port. When driving, follow staff directions to the vehicle deck. The deck can be quite windy, so hold onto your hat. To enjoy the famous udon, order soon after boarding for best results.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes total (ferry ride approximately 15 minutes). The morning ferry offers the clearest mountain silhouette from the deck.
