Learning the Eruption History and Nature at a Mini-Museum
About this spot
A "volcano mini-museum" within walking distance of Sakurajima Port. You can easily learn about the mountain's formation, eruption history, and the gradual return of vegetation to the lava fields through scale models and videos. Despite free admission, the exhibits are substantial, and visiting before exploring the island transforms the way you perceive the lava plains and raw mountainsides visible during your tour. The museum shop carries items made with volcanic ash and camellia oil products—perfect for scouting souvenirs with a Sakurajima character. From near the center, the Lava Beach Promenade extends along the coast, offering a scenic walk with lava plains views on the way to the next stop.
Tips
The exhibits can be toured in 30 to 40 minutes, and the video corner is a nice place to rest. If you plan to walk the Lava Beach Promenade, volcanic ash can dirty your shoes, so wet wipes are a helpful precaution.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes. Visiting in the morning before heading to the foot spa and observatory enhances the clarity of the landscape throughout the day.
