Affectionately known as the "Shrine of Bells," this is one of Izumi's representative power spots for good fortune. A 5-ton great bell—Japan's largest—hangs at the shrine gate, and the gilded bell is adorned with crane motifs befitting Izumi, a town of cranes. The gate is called the "Nareba Naru Tori Gate" (Gate Where Dreams Come True), and it is said that if you pass under the great bell and worship, your wishes will be granted. The shrine's Treasure Bell Hall houses Japan's tiniest bell at just 2 millimeters in diameter, and the playful pairing of Japan's greatest and smallest bells is one of the delights to enjoy here. With crane-themed amulets and talismans on display, stopping by this uniquely Izumi shrine during your samurai residences walk will surely boost your travel fortune.

Tips

It's conveniently located just a short drive from the samurai residences, making it easy to combine with your town walk. The shrine grounds are free to visit, and there is a parking lot. If you plan to receive a stamp book (goshuin) or crane talismans, it's wise to have cash on hand. Since you'll be looking up at the great bell, photographing from directly in front of the shrine gate is recommended.

Best time to visit

Approximately 40 minutes. The golden great bell shines most brightly in the clear light before noon.
