Japan's Largest-Scale Foothill Settlement with Stone Walls and Samurai Gates
About this spot
Among the samurai settlements called "fumoto" (foothill) established by the Satsuma Domain as outer castles throughout its territory, this district boasts the largest scale and has been designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. On both sides of alleys arranged in a grid pattern, rounded river stones create stone walls, trimmed hedges flourish, and refined samurai gates line the streets endlessly, preserving a strong sense of the Edo period. The publicly open Takesoezoe Residence was a filming location for the NHK Taiga Drama "Atsuhime," and the Saisho Residence still retains the engawa (veranda) where, it is said, archers could practice even on rainy days, along with hidden rooms—allowing you to feel the samurai way of life up close. A leisurely walk through these quiet, car-free streets will make you feel as though you've stepped into a period drama.
Tips
The district is extensive, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. Entry to the Takesoezoe and Saisho residences is included with the combination ticket from the history museum. The streets are still a living neighborhood for residents, so please refrain from entering non-public properties and take a quiet stroll. There are few shaded areas, so in summer, it's wise to bring a hat and drinks.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. In the morning when there are fewer people, you can savor the stone-walled alleys in peace.
