About this spot

An observatory standing on the shore of the reservoir formed by Tsuruda Dam, downstream from Sogi Falls (曽木の滝). The red-brick building rising from the lake's surface is the ruin of a hydroelectric power plant built in the Meiji era to harness the power of Sogi Falls, its row of arched windows resembling a medieval European castle. The electricity generated here is said to have supported industry in the surrounding region, making it an industrial heritage site telling the story of Japan's modernization. Its appearance changes with the dam's water level, and the sight of it half-submerged in the lake is equally fantastical. A quiet, spectacular spot well worth visiting together with Sogi Falls.

Tips

Viewing is limited to the observatory, as the ruins themselves are off-limits. When the water level of Tsuruda Dam is high, much of the ruin can be submerged and hard to see, so consider it a stroke of luck if you can see it clearly. It's a short walk from the parking lot to the observatory, so comfortable walking shoes are reassuring.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. The best time to view it is when the dam's water level drops and the ruins are fully visible
