A grand waterfall spanning 210 meters on the middle reaches of the Sendai River in Isa City, known as one of Kagoshima's leading scenic spots and called the Niagara of the Orient. Water splits into countless streams as it cascades down, cutting across the rock formation known as Sendatami Rock (千畳岩), and as you walk the promenade, the roar and spray press in on you. The surrounding area is maintained as a park with several viewing spots, along with shops and eateries lined up, making it perfect for a stroll. Beyond the powerful sight when water volume is high, the contrast of the falls with fresh spring greenery or autumn foliage is also spectacular, offering a different scene with every visit.
Tips
The park is free to enter and explore. Parts of the promenade can be wet and slippery from the spray, so wear comfortable walking shoes. You'll get sprayed more than you might expect near the falls, so be careful to protect your camera or smartphone from water. Mornings, before tour buses arrive, offer a relatively relaxed view.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 30 minutes. Early morning, before tourists increase, is the best chance to have the falls to yourself
