This spectacular 210-meter-wide waterfall on the middle reaches of the Sendai River in Isa City is known as the "Niagara of the East" and is one of Kagoshima Prefecture's finest scenic spots. Water splits into numerous streams and cascades down the rock formation known as Senjoju Rock, with the thunderous roar and spray becoming increasingly intense as you venture along the walkway. The surrounding area is developed as a park with observation points scattered throughout, and shops and dining venues line the area, making it perfect for a stroll. Whether during high water levels when the power is most dramatic or during spring greenery or autumn foliage when the leaves compete with the falls for beauty, each visit reveals a different landscape.

Tips

The park grounds are free to explore at your leisure. The walkway can be slippery in spots where spray dampens the surface, so wear sturdy shoes. When approaching the waterfall, the mist is heavier than expected, so protect your camera and smartphone from water damage. The early morning, before tour buses arrive, offers a relatively peaceful viewing experience.
