A zoo situated on rolling hills in southern Kagoshima City, renowned throughout Japan for its koala collection. Beyond the main gate, you'll be greeted by the sweeping panorama of the African Garden, where giraffes, zebras, and ostriches roam freely against the borrowed scenery of Sakurajima and Kinko Bay. The popular koalas are absolutely charming dozing among eucalyptus branches, and there's plenty to see including white tigers and red pandas. In one corner of the park is an old-fashioned amusement park, and from the Ferris wheel, you can overlook Kinko Bay and Sakurajima. It's a uniquely Kagoshima zoo where animals, volcano, and sea blend into one landscape.

Tips

Arriving shortly after opening on weekends and holidays ensures both the park and parking lot are less crowded and more comfortable. The park spreads across hillside terrain with many slopes, so wear comfortable walking shoes. If you get tired, there's a foot bath near the main entrance where you can rest – a small towel comes in handy.
