About this spot

A large gusuku (Ryukyuan castle) that served as the stronghold of the King of Hokuzan before the Ryukyu Kingdom was unified, and a component site of the “Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu” World Heritage listing. The stone walls, which curve gently along the terrain, are breathtaking in scale. Climb the stone-paved slope leading to the main enclosure, and once you're atop the walls, the blue of the East China Sea stretches out endlessly below. The wave-like stonework set against sea and sky is a landscape unique to the Ryukyus, quite unlike castles on mainland Japan. Enjoy a breezy walk through this spectacular castle site while reflecting on centuries of history.

Tips

The castle grounds have continuous stone-paved slopes and steps, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. There's little shade, so bring a hat and water. Your admission ticket also covers the adjacent History and Culture Center — learning about the gusuku's history before you climb makes the view all the more rewarding.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. In the clear morning air, the East China Sea beyond the walls looks its bluest.
