About this spot

The largest mangrove forest on Okinawa's main island, spreading at the mouth of the Kesakashii River in Higashi Village, designated as a national natural monument. Hiru-gi refers to the trees that form mangroves, and here you can observe three species: Ohiru-gi, Mehiru-gi, and Yaeyamahiru-gi. The site features wooden boardwalk paths, and when the tide recedes to reveal the tidal flats, you can spot fiddler crabs with one outsized claw and mudskippers that hop about. A natural observation spot befitting the conclusion of your Yanbarua journey, where you can closely experience the mangroves with their distinctive root systems and the activities of small creatures living among them.

Tips

Creature observation is best during low tide when the tidal flats are exposed. Checking a tide table before your visit will double your enjoyment. During summer, insects such as mosquitoes are common, so insect repellent is recommended. Enjoy observation from the wooden boardwalk and avoid stepping down onto the tidal flats.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. If your visit coincides with low tide, you're more likely to encounter tidal flat creatures.
