About this spot

A signature scenic spot of Okinawa Island, where a raised coral reef cliff juts dramatically into the East China Sea. An iconic rocky formation resembling an elephant's trunk serves as its symbol, and natural grass meadows blanket the cliff top. According to legend, the name derives from a Ryukyuan king's praise of the site as "grassland vast enough to seat ten thousand people." It has been treasured as a breathtaking destination since ancient times. Walking the well-maintained circuit trail offers ever-changing vistas—rugged cliffs, azure sea, and the string of resort hotels on the opposite shore. The adjacent facility houses a gift shop and food corner where you can rest before or after your walk. Afternoon light here is softer and the sea's blue appears deeper and richer.

Tips

Entry requires paying an observation fee at the adjacent facility before proceeding to the trail. Never venture outside the railings of the loop path, and be cautious of strong winds on the cliff top—hold onto your hat. With little shade along the route, bring sunscreen and plenty of water before you start walking.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Afternoon visits avoid backlighting, and this is when the elephant-trunk rock and sea blue are most photogenic.
