An Observation Point Overlooking a Dynamic Loop Bridge Descending to the Sea

About this spot

The so-called Nirai-Kanai Bridge, where Nirai Bridge and Kanai Bridge connect in succession, is Okinawa's main island southern region's premier drive spot, curving dramatically downward from a high plateau toward the sea. The name derives from "Nirai-Kanai" (ニライカナイ), a legendary utopia said to exist across the sea. From the observation point set atop the tunnel, you can take in the undulating bridge, the cobalt blue Pacific Ocean spreading beyond, and Takara Island (久高島) floating on the horizon all at once. After viewing the bridge from above, actually driving across it gives you an exhilarating sensation as if being drawn into the sea. The drive to your next destination, Okubu Island, becomes a scenic attraction in itself—a unique pleasure of this course.

Tips

The observation point is atop a tunnel, with limited parking nearby. Never stop on the bridge itself—it's dangerous. Take photos from the observation deck only. The road has many curves, so drive slowly and carefully. To avoid backlighting, photograph when the sun is high in the sky.

Best time to visit

Approximately 30 minutes. Late morning to early afternoon, when the sun is high, the ocean color is most vibrant and brilliant.
