The most sacred shrine in Japan, dedicated to Amaterasu Oomikami (天照大御神). The moment you cross Uji Bridge, the atmosphere transforms. Centuries-old cedar trees standing hundreds of feet tall line the white-pebbled approach, creating an atmosphere of profound tranquility. The path to the main sanctuary is an easy, gentle walk of about 10 minutes one way, manageable even with children. Since this evening's fireworks festival is dedicated to Ise Shrine, visiting the shrine during the day deepens the significance of the entire day's experience. You can also receive a commemorative stamp (goshuin) after your visit.
Tips
From Ise Station or Ujiyamada Station, a 10–15 minute bus ride to Naiku-mae (Inner Shrine) bus stop. Admission is free. Photography at the main sanctuary is prohibited beyond the torii gate at the upper stone steps, so a commemorative photo at the gate entrance is recommended. Commemorative stamps (goshuin) are available at the stamp office. On the day of the fireworks festival, return buses are crowded; checking bus stop locations in advance is wise.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes total. Morning through early afternoon has fewer visitors, allowing you to walk the approach unhurried.
